Is it me or do the last 2 look like an ad for the Dodge Journey?

Hey Frank, such awesome pictures! I love the first one the most and I need to say that I have tried (with no success) to capture my kids in the swing all the time. I have a few questions if you don’t mind teaching, and if you have the time: 1. manual focus or autofocus ( it seemed that the movement of the swing would mess up my focus in Af)2. what aperture and shutter speed you used for the first picture and the second (looks like very hight shutter speed to freeze the motion but yet enough light to see the features, rather than get the silouete result.)
any other tricks that you can think of?
always very appreciative of your work and advice,

Hey GildaThanks for the kind words and enthusiasm!
Hopefully I can provide a little insight:
      1. Autofocus for this kind of stuff 95% of the time….and yes, there are lots that the focus will not track. Shoot a lot and keep adjusting on the fly. Very occasionally I will go to manual focus when the auto just can’t handle it and I’ll pick a spot to focus on and allow the subject to pass through that plane of focus. Timing is everything.
      2. F2.8 on both in Auto mode. I shoot wide open for the most part unless I need to stop down for some reason. In this case shooting wide open (f2.8) gave me relatively fast shutter speeds of 1/640th and 1/800th respectively.
      3. There’s also a bit of post production on each of these images. They all needed to be “opened up” a bit since there was no supplemental lighting. So I opened up the mid-tones, keeping the contrast crisp. I also retouched a couple of objectionable wardrobe items. Other than that they’re pretty straight forward images.
Hope that gives some insight without blowing the entire mystique…
